Is there a difference between round and low profile baitcaster?
Is there any difference in performance between a round baitcast reel and one of the flatter low profile ones?
The main difference between a round reel and a low profile reel is strength. Round reels could handle a lot more stress than low profile reels due to their geometric shape.
If you pay attention, you will notice almost all salmon, musky, sturgeon and/or saltwater baitcasting reels were round. All saltwater big game reels (that could handle very large fish like marlin) are round. Round is the most rigid shape because force will be distributed more evenly along the edge. As a result, round reels could handle a lot more stress than low profile reels before failing.
However, not all low profile reels are incapable of handling stress like round reels. Abu Garcia introduced the very first low profile reel that’s strong enough to handle bigger species (including tuna) called Revo Toro. As far as I know, there is still no other low profile reel on the market that could offer this kind of strength.
