Fishing Rods

If you think that you’d benefit from a new fly fishing rod, perhaps because yours is old and has seen better days, or is heavy, or doesn’t offer you the performance that you need, then you’ll want to make sure that you choose the right one.
Here’s what you need to think about
1. What sort of fishing do you actually do? If you sit by the side of the lake, and wait for the fish to bite, whilst chatting with friends, then you’re going to look for different features than if you put on your waders and spend all day stood in a fast flowing river trying to catch salmon.
2. Where you fish will make a difference too. Perhaps you always fish at the same place, or try somewhere new all the time. you might want to have a few rods so that you’re always prepared.
3. Fishing at different times of year can make a difference as to what sort of rod would be best for you. Fishing when the water level is high is different fishing when it’s low, and you might be more involved when trying to land a fish. You might want a shorter, or longer rod if you’re looking at fishing at certain times of the year.
4. How often you fish can help you determine what sort of rod you need. There’s no point in getting the lightest, or the best, or the most expensive, if you only go fishing a couple of times a year. If you spend every spare minute with your rod in your hand, then you’ll want the very best tackle that you can get.
5. The size of your fishing rod might also be important to you. Depending on your height, or strength you might benefit from a longer or shorter rod, and you’ll also need to think about the sort of fish you’re going to catch.
6. Every angler can tell whether a fishing rod is the right weight for them. If your rod is too heavy or too light, why not change it for one that’s better for you.
7. If you do decide that you need a new rod, you’ll want to make sure that your existing fishing reels are compatible. Your rod might be quite old, or you might favour an obscure brand of rod or reel.
8. There are lots of brands of fishing rod to choose from, and you might be overwhelmed when looking. Why not ask other anglers what they use, or what they would recommend for the type of fishing you do.
9. You’ll want your rod to be easy to use, so that you can put it together quickly, and then take it apart at the end of the day, when your hands are cold and wet. If you struggle when it comes to assembling and disassembling your rod, then perhaps it’s time for a new one.
10. No matter what sort of fishing rod you currently use, or want, it’s essential that you get value for money from it. There’s no point in buying something expensive you’ll never use, or a cheap fishing rod that isn’t right.
Now you know whether your rod is right for you, do you need a new fly fishing rod?
